Tryptyk The Monk (Mnich) powstał w 2020 roku. Akryl na płótnie 3 x (140 x 200 cm), pigment aluminiowy/złoto i projekcja wideo.

Obraz Caspara Davida Friedricha The Monk by the Sea (Der Mönch am Meer, 1810) świadomie pozbywa się charakterystycznej dla obrazów artysty, centralnej, odwróconej do widza postaci, konfrontującej romantyczny krajobraz, na rzecz przedstawienia postaci ludzkiej jako nieistotnego detalu, przytłoczonego skalą „powierzchni” natury. Inspirowany ideą obrazu Lejman, poprzez projekcję ponownie wprowadza samotną postać w centrum wywołującego skojarzenia z krajobrazem, abstrakcyjnego tryptyku. Wspomnianym protagonistą jest tu jednak nie człowiek, lecz biały, medyczny kombinezon, poruszany na filmie przez wdmuchiwane powietrze, w zabawnie „ludzkiej” choreografii. Po wypuszczeniu powietrza, „pandemiczny” kostium kurczy się i nieruchomieje, pozbawiając nas iluzji życia, podobnie jak iluzją obecności na obrazie jest jego projekcja.

Wystawa w Galerii Rotunda jest pierwszą prezentacją tej pracy.

Dominik Lejman 

Urodzony w 1969 r. w Gdańsku. Absolwent Malarstwa Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Gdańsku oraz Royal College of Art w Londynie. Profesor doktor habilitowany, prowadzi II Pracownię Malarstwa na Uniwersytecie Artystycznym im. Magdaleny Abakanowicz w Poznaniu. Zajmuje się malarstwem, które łączy z projekcjami wideo, realizuje wideofreski i prace w formie wielkoformatowych projekcji. Jest autorem licznych wystaw indywidualnych oraz projektów publicznych. Brał udział w wielu ekspozycjach zbiorowych, m.in. 9 Biennale Architektury w Wenecji w 2004, Sanguine w Fondazione Prada w Mediolanie (2019), Macht! Licht! w Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (2022). Ostatnia indywidualna wystawa Lejmana Lunatics reprezentowała pawilon Madnicity, San Servolo, podczas 59 Biennale Sztuki w Wenecji w 2022. Jego prace można znaleźć w kolekcjach publicznych jak m.in. Muzeum Sztuki w Łodzi, Bremen Kunsthale, w przestrzeniach publicznych, jak Cleveland Clinic collection oraz w wielu kolekcjach prywatnych. Laureat Paszportu Polityki za rok 2000, jak również innych polskich i zagranicznych nagród, m.in. Berlin Art Prize (2018). Mieszka i pracuje w Berlinie i Poznaniu.

The triptych entitled The Monk was created in 2020 using acrylic on canvas, aluminium pigment/gold (3 x: 140 x 200 cm) and video projection.

In his painting entitled The Monk by the Sea (Der Mönch am Meer, 1810), Caspar David Friedrich consciously gets rid of the central figure – who normally faces the viewer and stares at the romantic landscape in other paintings by this artist – to depict a human figure as an insignificant detail, overwhelmed by the scale of the ‘surface’ of nature. Inspired by the idea of the painting, Lejman re-introduces a lonely figure, through a video projection, to the centre of an abstract triptych that evokes associations with the landscape. In the video, however, the aforementioned protagonist is not a man but a white medical suit, moved by blown air in a humorously ‘human’ choreography. When the air is released, the ‘pandemic’ costume shrinks and freezes, depriving us of the illusion of life, just as the image is its projection is the illusion of presence.

The exhibition at the Rotunda Gallery is the first to feature this artwork.

Dominik Lejman

Born in Gdańsk in 1969, he graduated from the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk and the Royal College of Art in London. He has the title of habilitated (post-doctoral degree) professor and runs the 2^nd Painting Studio at the Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts in Poznań. He deals with painting, which he combines with video projections, and also creates video murals and large-format projections. He is the author of numerous individual exhibitions and public projects. He participated in many collective exhibitions, such as the 9^th Venice Architecture Biennale (2004), Sanguine at the Fondazione Prada in Milan (2019) and Macht! Light! at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (2022). Lejman’s latest solo exhibition entitled Lunatics represented the Madnicity Pavilion, San Servolo, during the 59^th Venice Biennale in 2022. His works can be found in public collections in the Museum of Art in Łódź and Bremen Kunsthalle, in public spaces, such as the Cleveland Clinic collection and in many private collections. He won the ‘Polityka’ Passport Award (2000), as well as other Polish and foreign awards, including Berlin Art Prize (2018). He lives and works in Berlin and Poznań.
