Program
The laboratory is understood mainly as a practical workshop, while keeping some basics regarding its theoretic, technical and mechanical matters around the language of comics. And so, combining lectures with the working aspects of the subject, the studio proposes several projects for students to emerge in.

The laboratory provides the tools needed in order to analyse the narrative aspects of drawing and developing communicative skills based on comic’s own language, sequential patterns and storytelling skills.

When originating a narrative based on those standards, it is imperative to learn how all the tools of this system work, not only to improve narrative criteria, but also to achieve a whole new range of possibilities that could be, furthermore, applied to enhance and enrich the work in any other artistic field.

Comic is a complex system of intricate mechanisms that hands us the possibility to build new realities and create communication bridges, enabling the reader to dive into those visual and magical universes of stories. Of course, its complexity is noticeable as the media requires the artist to have a very wide set of skills subjected to narration, storytelling, sequentialization, plastic and artistic matureness or literacy abilities, amongst others.

As mentioned, the course is partially theoretical, which means lectures are decisive for the development of the student’s skills. The content of those is as follows:

Comic History:

  • Introduction towards pictographic narration and the ideas previous to the paradigm of the narrative system.
  • From Middle Aged manuscripts to engraving and printing era: the construction of an image-based storytelling language.
  • The appearance of comic as an artistic medium: American press, European albums and Japanese manga.
  • Graphic novels and neo-comic, the contemporary side of narrative constructions.

Understanding comics:

  • Typology of the sequence and its uses.
  • Spatial and timing perceptions: how to overcome an artistic medium base on time and the coordination of images.
  • Texts and images: oral, written expression and the balance between literature and plasticity. The use of typography as a communicative graphic element.
  • Plastic qualities of comics: construction of a multi-layered complex system.
  • Typology of the page and its categorization according to its uses: an approach to the frame and the different aspects of space treatment in the media.
  • Narrative vectors: the impression of the story and the control of the reader’s visual and narrative patterns.
  • Storytelling procedures and creative process for scripts. Planification of intentions: what and how

Iconicity in Comics:

  • Typology of icon and picture. The development of the perception on reality and plasticity. The identity of a narrative visual world and McCloud’s triangle of abstraction.

Time perception:

  • Understanding of timing procedures and its impression in the medium.
  • The different closures according to image sequentialization.
  • The invisible storyline: narrative vectors and timing.
  • How to measure and perceive time in visual representation: structures, forms and uses.

Spatial aspects:

  • The Cage, analysis of the treatment of space inside a story or diegetic spaces.
  • Analysis and review of the space outside the story or extra-diegetic spaces: the form, the shape and the objectification of comics.
  • Space in and out the frame: the manipulation of frames and its significances, spatial construction, planification and composition.
  • Comic, narrative architecture.
  • Drawing time: the page and the manipulation of time through narrative units as timing fragmentations.

Techniques:

  • Digital and analogic approaches to comic creation: production, colouring, retouching, typographies and final art.
